Grandfamilies are a unique family structure in which grandparents assume the role of primary caregivers for their grandchildren. Dynamics of these intergenerational families can be challenging to navigate, both as a member of the family and as a helper to the family. Grandfamilies, just like any other family, can also have loving and caring relationships that support a child’s growth and development. Grandparents might serve as primary caregivers for their grandchildren for many different reasons, and sometimes a shift to a grandparent in the role of caregiver can happen suddenly for a family. To best serve grandfamilies, educators might consider the following questions, conversation prompts, and action items to help both the adults and children in grandfamilies feel included, appreciated, and special.
